This is utterly crazy!! I have to admit, likely the chiew cheng kia!! (Clumsy kid). I am the problem..
Seven times! That is how many times those damn Tomans (aka. Giant Snakeheads) smashed at my Frog Lure and I landed nothing!! Yes! Zero! Kosong!
We planned for so long for this trip and finally in the beautiful month of April this year, we managed to make a trip up to Pontian Dam in Pahang, Malaysia, to seek out the elusive Tomans of Sungei Pontian, Sepayang.
The result? We caught nothing! (weeping in my heart!)
For those who had caught record-size Tomans more often than I have caught Tamban (Bait Fish) using Sabiki Size 6, do be nice and stop giggling!! I told my girls and my wife, who can’t stop laughing, that this failure, is just like any other failure in our life..We have to take it in our stride and move on. I did not laugh at them when my girls faltered in their Chinese language exams, or when my wife screwed up the steam fish dinner.
Honestly, TC (my Malaysian abang pancing kaki) and I still couldn’t believe what we saw.. TC had his share of misses too.. 3 smashes on his frog lure as well. We both ‘Ice Cream’ (No catches).

This is like a heaven for Toman! (Sungai Pontian near Kampung Sepayang)
We suspected the SPRO King Daddy 90 we used was too big.. Or could it be that we did not ‘tuned’ the frog? TC assured me it was likely due to the tons of submerged water plants that resulted in the judgement error by the Toman by approx. 13.6% off tangent to the axis of retrieve of my frog lure..
I turned around, looked deep into his shades, and showed him my straightened my middle phalanges on my right hand..
Deep in my heart, as one of 2,680 elite practicing engineers found in Serangoon area alone, I know it has to be the water temperature. It was simple too hot that day and hence the reflective index of the water must have changed by approx 23.8 degrees, resulting in the Tomans striking at an error tolerance of 28mm off my frog’s position.
We both nodded in agreement. (Not sure he heard what’s in my heart or agreed with the hand sign I showed him earlier)

We left Sungei Pontain around 5.30pm, went to Fu Man Lou in Endau, near Mersing for a good seafood dinner, before driving back to Johor Bahru. We did not speak much about our failure during our journey back.. It’s not that we were embarrassed about it. We were simply too full with the Cuttlefish Rojak, Steam Wild Seabass and the Fish Cartilage Soup.
We vowed to return in the near future, to be better prepared with more time, more lures, and definitely more sun-block.
